Dear Olympic High School families,
Olympic High School has a strong commitment to excellence. We have served the Steele Creek community for more than fifty years, providing a sound, rigorous and contemporary education rooted in innovative practices. Our students can choose from eight career-based pathways in five academies. All five academies have been designated “distinguished,” putting our school in an elite group that only two other U.S. high schools can claim.
Olympic, with ongoing support of hundreds of Steele Creek stakeholders hungry for updating the design of education, succeeds by employing a collaborative, holistic approach. Students are provided a high school experience immersed in personalization blended with educational activities structured to develop vital 21st century skills as emphasized by American thought leaders in Education because of their significant role in determining a person’s level of success in life: 1) critical thinking and problem solving; 2) creativity and innovation; 3) communication verbally and in writing; 4) collaboration and teamwork; and, 5) emotional, non-cognitive abilities.
Olympic has been wildly successful in its Next Generational approach as demonstrated by the increases on NC State exams and graduation rates. Most importantly, over 600 organizations have demonstrated their ongoing belief in Olympic’s transformative model by volunteering over 26,000 hours and donating more than $16 M in cash and in-kind towards projects and programs designed so more youth can receive meaningful educational opportunities which promise upward economic and social mobility.
Olympic High School is a 21st century STEAME school – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and EQ (emotional intelligence), where its acclaimed NAF Career Academies have been recognized nationally for their career AND college readiness programs (OHS ranks in Top 1% nationally). Olympic’s success has drawn extensive national media coverage through CNN, NPR, PBS, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, CNBC, U.S. News and World Report. And, the high school has hosted visits from school districts across the nation and world as well as the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor. Furthermore, a recent #1 Amazon Best Seller about the need for transformation with K-12 Education in America -- Ted Dintersmith’s What School Could Be -- dedicates a section of the book in promoting Olympic’s best practices. This past year, our graduation rate was 91% with 85% of those seniors graduated with industry certifications. This ensures that our students are ready for any post-secondary option they choose.
As principal of Olympic High School, I am committed to seeing every student succeed. That means having every student prepared for the next step on the educational journey. Our school ensures that we work to provide every student a safe and comfortable environment. I have been fortunate to have served my entire educational career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. I received my bachelors in Secondary Education at The University of Akron and received my masters in Curriculum and Supervision through The University of North Carolina-Charlotte. I was chosen to be a member of the New Leaders for New Schools, second Charlotte cohort. in 2010. Only 6% of applicants a make it into this prestigious program where I received principal training from the best and brightest around strategies and practices that ensure that all students reach their full human and economic potential.
Here at Olympic we believe that our main purpose is to foster a safe, nurturing environment that celebrates diversity and promotes unity. We will provide an innovative and rigorous educational experience that offers a wide range of academic, athletic, artistic, and social opportunities and careers. We will consistently engage with our stakeholders to ensure that we are living out our core values every day. My role as principal of Olympic is to ensure that all decisions made, every day, align with these beliefs.I look forward to working with you and your student.
